10 Takeaways From Consuming 64 Books This Year

Twitter Post

47 books and counting.

These are all the books that I have either read this year or that I’m currently reading.

This doesn’t include 17 audio books that I listened to or that I’m currently listening to.

Here are my 10 biggest takeaways from consuming all these books.

🧵

Bookworm

Note— this isn’t a book review post, but more my take on a year full of reading a minimum of 10 pages a night and listening to audio books while driving or running.

  1. What you can learn from books, in so many ways, is far better than a degree. You are literally getting front row seat into the wisdom and experience of each author you read from. You hold in your hands their secrets.

But there’s one thing that makes all the difference that neither a degree nor book can make you do; TAKE ACTION IN THE REAL LIFE.

  2. I’ve spent THOUSANDS on courses, programs, mentorship’s, tools, software, conferences, etc.

And further more I’ve invested in real estate, businesses, people, teams, stocks and many other things with expected ROIs…

Books are by far my best investment. @collin_ruth89 and I talked about this in his podcast the other day.

  3. Unpopular opinion, but you don’t have to just read one book at a time. @trentjhughes and I must be reading soulmates. 🤣

I’m never reading just one book at a time. But why?

    • I love reading

    • you start to recognize idea patterns from the greats

    • I’m able to consume more concepts this way

  4. Take notes. It doesn’t matter HOW you do it, but figure out some way to capture the information you’re reading. Here’s how I do it:

    • I underline anything and everything that stands out to me and I make notes on the page next to those underlines

    • when I finish, I then go back through and take a picture of each page with my phone

    • I copy and paste the underlined words to a note that I save for each book

    • I refer back to those notes constantly

  5. I only read non fiction / bios.

I don’t have anything against fiction. There’s plenty of fiction books that I’ve read over the years that I absolutely love. But reading for me is both for enjoyment AND education.

I read to get batter and I love to get better.

If the book doesn’t help make me better, I don’t read it.

  6. If I start a book and don’t enjoy it, I’ll set it down for a bit and move on to another.

If I pick that book up again and still don’t enjoy it, I’ll stop reading it.

It’s not worth spending time on a book that doesn’t interest you.

  7. 10 pages a day. NON NEGOTIABLE. Every. Single. Day.

This is just part of the plan. It’s usually more than 10, but that’s my minimum. My day isn’t complete without that.

  8. Reference the 10 pages a day— Some days are CRAZY! You need a book to consume on those days where you can blast through the pages AND still gain value. Here’s the one I use.

Book

  1. Let your books be loved. It’s easy to get kind of crazy about taking care of your books. Keeping them pristine and like new… but why?

Keep your books out, look through them, write in them, let your kids use them, draw in them, hold them.

Make books just a normal thing that’s always around in the house with only positive feelings about. Raise book worms. 📚🪱

  2. Reading to your kids is just as important as reading to yourself. Don’t forget to do that.

They see you read, which is awesome, but make sure to read to them.

At first it’ll be silly kids books, but then as they get a little older (my oldest is 6) you can start getting into the good stuff.

Our new favorite series is Tuttle Twins. Super fun books for entrepreneur/ business minded parents.

BONUS:

Gift books whenever you can.

They might not enjoy it at the time, but they’ll keep it. You never know when they’ll pick the book up and it will change their life.

Lastly, readers are leaders. 🚀 😎
