Don't build the app first

Blog · Nov 06, 2026

I had a call this week with a gal that wants to build a business for some side hustle money.

She's a mom and knows how CRAZY the calendar gets when with kids and appointments and everything else in life.

Her goal is to help OTHER moms with that same mess, using AI.

Her first idea was… build an app. Which I get the draw... but this is what I said:

We ALL want to build an app and get a bunch of subscriptions and have a sweet exit. BUT I had to talk her down from that a little bit.

Not because the idea is bad. Its defintiely not.

The problem she's solving is evergreen.

BUT stuff like "mom AI apps" is moving so fast that a great app would probably feel outdated in a few months.

And the foundation of a solid SaaS… is a service that has actually been proven.

So THAT is where we started.

The service.

Work 1:1 with busy moms. Figure out how to help them organize the chaos.

Use AI tools to work on the stuff that actually helps them through the week

THEN, if it works, maybe open a community.

Do a free tier as a funnel.

then paid for the deeper stuff.

Live hot seats where somebody brings their real week and you solve it out loud.

The app can for sure be the endgame though!

She's not an AI expert, but what she CAN talk about is being a mom and organizing a life and what she's already figured out. The AI is secondary.

Don't worry about feeling behind on the tools. Tomorrow the tools will be different anyway.

Focus on what you already know. Your unfair advantage. Find the people in that world. Pinpoint their problems. THEN go ask AI how to solve them.
