Full Circle: What Watching Toy Story With My Own Kids Taught Me About Raising Them in a Tech World

Twitter Post

31 years ago the first Toy Story came out. I was 5. The same age as my middle child who came with me (and her older sister) to see Toy Story 5 last night.

People can say what they want, but this is one of the greatest animated series of movies of all time.

Each one being meaningful in its own way.

But then again, I might feel this way specifically because the timeline of these films have aligned with much of the timeline of my life.

The crazy thing is that it’s come full circle now and I’m sitting in a theater with MY own kids.

This one however hit harder than the others. “Toys vs. Tech” is a REAL battle for parents with kids this age.

We want them to be in the know. Learn tech, understand it. to not be afraid of it and instead— actually BUILD with it.

But then there’s a dark side as the movie shows. Where friendships, creativity and communication can be stunted.

This falls back on something I was told my a mentor of mine. It’s really easy to be a 6/10 parent, but it takes a lot of intention to be a 9/10 parent.

Tech CAN and IS amazing and I’m so many ways a blessing. BUT— it can not be given without intention. And that is what takes time and effort.

Parents, you are amazing. Stay in the fight and stay intentional. You are living the good ol days right now! Enjoy them!
