Golden Handcuffs Are Actually a Head Start
"I just don't have the time."
I hear that on almost every call I get on. Somebody with a stable job, a couple kids, an itch to build something, and this feeling that the day job is the thing standing between them and the life they want.
I get it. I was a cop for 10 years while I was building stuff on the side.
But here's what I've come to believe. When you find the thing you're actually passionate about, when you find that project you want to sink your teeth into, you'll FIND the time. You'll work on it after the kids go to bed. You'll jam on it on a Saturday morning. Time isn't usually the real problem. Direction is.
So the question isn't "how do I find more hours." It's "what's the thing?"
The job isn't the enemy, it's the funding
That job you're a little frustrated with right now? It's the best business funding you're ever going to get.
Golden handcuffs, right? It's a catch 22 and I'm not going to pretend it isn't. But while you're wearing them, you can iterate a hundred times without ever worrying that you're going to lose your house.
That's exactly what I did. I got paid my salary while I ran through a bunch of different ventures figuring out what worked. Some base hits. Some doubles. Nothing crazy. But I got to fail over and over and still show up Monday and get a paycheck.
In police and fire you're not going to get rich. But you'll be fine. It'll be a comfortable life. And that comfort buys you something most people who quit cold turkey never get... a whole lot of at-bats.
Most people get one shot and a shrinking bank account. You get twenty shots.
So keep it as long as you possibly can. Not forever. Just long enough to figure out what actually fits.
The advantage you're not counting
Here's the other thing people sleep on. Whatever you do all day gives you an unfair advantage, and you're probably not even seeing it.
If your job puts you in front of local business owners, you already walk into the room with instant credibility. Not in a shady way. You're just there, and you're a real person in the community, so when you say "hey, do you guys have a website? how's that going?" they actually answer you.
I had a coworker who did this and it worked way better than anybody expected. He started a commercial cleaning company on the side, hired people we already knew to do the cleaning, and pitched the exact businesses and buildings he was already walking into every week. They ate it up. He makes more from the cleaning company now than he ever did from the badge.
Same goes for what you SEE all day. Every industry has a broken system in it somewhere. People still running things on paper and pencil. Companies with real demand who never answer the phone. If you're inside that world, you already know where the gaps are, and that knowledge is worth more than any course you'll ever buy.
Where to actually start
Don't start with "how do I make money." Start with getting capable.
Open up Claude, do a voice dictation brain dump, and just vomit all of it out. Here's what I do. Here's what I've noticed in my industry. Here's the problems I see. Here's what I think would be better. Let's talk this out.
Have a real two-way conversation with it. That does two things. It educates the model on who you are and what you're after, and it forces you to actually articulate the thing you've been half-thinking about for a year.
Then go find five people who are further down the road than you and get on a call with them. Not in a group chat. In the DMs. That one habit changed everything for me early on, because I got to borrow experience I was never going to have on my own.
You don't need more time. You need one thing worth giving your time to.
Stay in the fight, Kevin
