He Built An App To Replace His 401k
All Joe (@xtrmist78) wanted was for the app he loved to be brought back.
He reached out to the developer and was told “if you like it that much, just go build your own”…
Challenge accepted.
No tech background.
No funding.
No vibecoding
This story is about a dude on a mission who built an app to replace his 401k
🧵
Joe was 230 lbs, 35% body fat, and just getting into CrossFit several years ago.
He found an app that helped him track every lift, PR, and WOD.
—> MyWOD.
Then one day, it just… stopped working.
Joe reached out to the original creator to see if he could bring it back.
The guy first tried to sell it for $50k, THEN he basically challenged Joe to make it himself.
He obviously didn’t know Joe well enough.
Joe built the whole thing from scratch.
Funny story; the trademark expired and the domain was available. 🤣
Joe had no dev experience.
He found a developer
Spent $20K out of pocket
Fought through months of headaches
Got it live in the App Store
Why’d he do it?
Why not??
He loved the app and knew others would as well. It was already proven
If you CrossFit, you NEED this app
The new @myWODapp is clean:
Graphs, notes, benchmarks
Works without a gym or affiliate
$9.99 lifetime access (for now)
Subscriptions coming soon
Built by a CrossFitter for CrossFitters.
Joe’s not chasing hype.
He’s building something sustainable:
4M CrossFitters
1% adoption = 40K users
$2.99/month —> $1 net
= $40K/month in recurring revenue
That’ll do alright I guess…
This convo is loaded with lessons:
App-building without knowing how to code
What it actually costs
Why most “free” apps disappear
If you’ve got the itch to build, this will light you up. 🔥
