How Do YOU Balance Work And Family?

Twitter Post

The entrepreneurial parent

I want to get these words out while they’re fresh. Honestly I think this would be best for a video or podcast, but this is the form of media I have in hand right now.

There’s a weird scenario of being a parent, building a legacy, being present, all wrapped up in box and tied with a bow of guilt that is SO hard to explain, but if you know YOU KNOW.

There’s a fantasy that I have that when I make enough on my businesses that I can bridge the gap and leave my W2.

Which is ENTIRELY within our reach, BUT…

And it’s a big one, then I’m on my own and out of the security of salary and benefits. @trentjhughes just made a post about this unpopular opinion

@shannonjean talks about building that flexibility to your life and owning your time in that way.

That’s the goal obviously, but so many fall short.

Why?

Tons of reasons, but I’ll give you one and then an example.

Parkinson’s law. Basically that you’ll fill the time with the same amount of things even if you’re given more time.

(Total summary there, google it for a better explanation)

The example:

I was out of town last week and able to decompress from my W2… But now I had seemingly more time to do my other work… the result is I didn’t really have a vacation.

I did, but NOT really. I just busied myself with more. I talk more about that HERE

If & When I do bridge the gap, I foresee two things.

  1. I’ll now feel like EVERYTHING rides on this work so I have to work even harder (no salary and benefits to help anymore)

  2. I’ll finally be able to fully commit to doing what I love 100% of the time.

I legit wake up fired up to run these businesses. Being able to do that full time will be AMAZING

Until that time comes, I have to really figure out how to balance this.

@legacybuilder__ makes a great post here on how to do that

But ultimately, it’ll take some time to really let go and find the “balance”. Like I said, some never do.

With that said, I am soon to be a dad of 3. Im holding on to my “kids nap time work sesh” by my finger tips as my oldest is basically done with those… my youngest is still there, but not for long.

So then what do I do? Do they sit and have quiet time (yeah right)? Or is the TV a babysitter? Or do I give up on that precious productivity?

I’m already getting up at 4, do I make that 3? 😴

These are the kinds of things that swirl around in my head.

Not too many people talk about them, but they are very important and very relevant to being a parent and especially an entrepreneurial parent.

If you feel these feels, let me know. I’m always here to chat.
