The I’ll Start When I… Fallacy
Stop trying to get ready and just DO IT
- I'll start exercising when I have more time.
- I'll start saving money when I get a raise.
- I'll start studying harder when the exams are closer.
- I'll start eating healthy when the holidays are over.
- I'll start looking for a new job when I feel more prepared.
- I'll start learning a new language when I travel to that country.
- I'll start reading more when I finish this TV series.
- I'll start going to bed earlier when my schedule isn't so busy.
- I'll start writing my book when I have the perfect idea.
- I'll start playing an instrument when I find the right teacher.
- I'll start traveling when I save enough money.
- I'll start a diet when the weekend is over.
- I'll start investing when the market is more stable.
- I'll start focusing on my hobbies when my kids are older.
- I'll start taking care of my mental health when I'm not so busy.
At a certain point, you’ll never be able to start anything. It’s a vicious cycle of analysis paralysis. You’ll tell yourself that you’ll start when… but your “when” will require something that you’re not ready to start.
A domino effect of indecision. A rabbit hole of fear and doubt.
But WHAT IF… and just go with me here on this…
—What if you just did it?
Like just started something without doing what you THINK you need to do before you begin?
What if you just threw the preconceived pre reqs out the window and went for it, FULL SEND?
What if you did 50 push ups and 50 sit ups when you wake up and before you go to bed?
- You’d have 700 push ups and 700 sit ups each week
What if you only cut out the cake and cookies over the holidays? Nothing else.
- You’d end up eating THOUSANDS less calories over that season.
What if you start saving $5 a day right NOW?
- You’ll save 140 per month and almost $1700 per year. Invested right, that goes a long way.
What if you go to bed just 5 min earlier each night?
- By the end of the week, you’ll be going to bed 35min earlier. That makes a big difference!
It’s never going to be the “perfect time”. Those times don’t exist. The BEST time was yesterday and the next best time is now.
Don’t be afraid of making mistakes along the way, be afraid of never starting to begin with.
