ROI of a beach banner ad? Let’s do the math 🧵
Haven’t seen one of these in a while and it got me thinking… is this worth it from a marketing standpoint?
Like @mhp_guy with his billboard, what’s the ROI of this?
Here’s my deep dive

1) Research shows in SoCal, you’re looking at about 600 per hour of flight time.
Maybe more by a beach like this.
2) custom banner printing from 2000.
Audible might have spent 2500 on this ad here
3) a crowded beach on the weekend like this might have 50k-100k eyeballs.Conservatively 70k… but probably like 10-20% paying attention
4) this is pretty top of funnel stuff. I’m going to guess MAYBE 1% direct response rate. Maybe…
5) now let’s do some math…
Let’s say Audible’s free trial paid conversion rate is 30%…
and the paid subscription LTV is ~150 (assuming $15/mo, average 8–10 months retention).
From 10,000 exposures:
- 0.1% sign up = 10 trials
- 3 stick = 450 LTV generated
If the flight cost $2,000 that’s $666 CAC per paying customer.
That’s not great…
compared to digital ads (Audible might pay 150 CAC online).
BUT- if it’s 50 signups instead of 10?
CAC drops to ~$133, which is actually pretty good.
Here’s my conclusion… for what it’s worth
This is good for big brands… not direct CAC. Audible has the money to spend
For small businesses- almost never worth it. Sorry.
