Same Product, Sexier Package
Quick story that came up on a strategy call this week.
Greens powder has been around for 20 years. Two decades of green sludge in a shaker bottle. Then a company came along and put greens... in a GUMMY. Two and a half years later they sold for over a billion dollars.
Same product. Different package. Billion dollars.
We were on a call this week helping someone shape their AI offer, and this idea kept coming back around. Because what they wanted to build already sort of exists. An AI that manages your calendar, watches your inbox, sends you a morning brief, recaps your day at 5pm, tells you what actually needs your attention right now. Strip away the branding and that's... an executive assistant.
But nobody's excited to buy "an AI executive assistant." Call it an AI Chief of Staff? Now you've got something. Nobody has won that race yet. That's the gummy.
So lesson one: you might not need a new product. You might just need a sexier package.
Lesson two is about pricing, and this one changed how I think about every offer.
Don't price against your costs. Price against the alternative.
What does the thing you're replacing actually cost? A vetted overseas executive assistant runs $2,000 to $2,500 a month. A domestic one? Easily six figures a year with a full-time salary. So when your AI version comes in at $499 a month... that's not expensive. Next to the alternative, that's a STEAL. The price only looks high when there's nothing sitting next to it.
And run the math on where that goes. Fifty clients at $499 a month is about $25k a month, largely passive. That's the whole game.
Lesson three: there are two definitions of "easiest," and picking the wrong one will quietly kill your product.
There's what's easiest for YOU to build. And there's what's easiest for your CLIENT to adopt. They are almost never the same thing.
Always optimize for the client. Zero friction on their end. It plugs into whatever they already use, no new software to learn, no migration project. Zero friction is what keeps people paying you for years.
Even if that means the hard version for you. Because here's the thing... AI is the worst it's ever going to be today. The hard build gets easier every single month. Client friction never fixes itself.
One last thing. The best products come from a problem you actually have. Be your own first customer. If you'd pay for it yourself, tomorrow, without hesitation... that's the signal. If you're building something you'd never use, you're going to find out the hard way that nobody else would either.
Same product. Sexier package. Priced against the alternative. Zero friction to adopt.
That's a real offer.
Stay in the fight, Kevin
