The Donut Shop Lesson

Twitter Post

Cop jokes aside, you can learn a lot about business from your local donut shops.

For example:

Founder led companies are just ran better. Plain and simple.

Further, founder operated companies are generally even better.

And THAT is exactly what you’ll find in the best local donut shops.

The owner is there and delivers every box with love and appreciation.

They know the names of their regulars and their kids and throw in extra donut holes to elicit more smiles.

That kind of effort isn’t scalable. But sometimes scaling isn’t the answer. Sometimes, it’s perfectly okay to just be the best freaking donut shop in your 3 mile radius.

While Dunkin is a behemoth of a company and I have the utmost respect for the founder, William Rosenberg, Dunkin is NOT your local shop anymore. And it shows.

Don’t get me wrong, these were delicious, but the “Cheers” experience that we have at our weekly shop just wasn’t there.

People come in for the “donuts” and they return for the experience. This applies to pretty much every other business.
