When Work and Fatherhood Collide

Twitter Post

It took me leaving law enforcement and working from home to realize that cops have it easy…

Ok set aside the fact that you risk your life each shift. That’s an outlier.

The kids are on holiday break right now and going stir crazy.

I don’t have shifts away from home anymore (thankfully)

Now my work is done on my laptop at the kitchen table.

And those of you also WFH know how difficult it is to still be productive AND a quality parent while kids are on break.

Deep flow states don’t exist.

You just muscle through and accept it’s going to be a little harder.

I’m trying to take the head on approach here explain this to my kids.

Today it came out like this:

Remember how dad used to go to work at the police station? And now I don’t anymore, I work on my computer at home? Well sometime it’s a hard balance to work from home because all I really want to do is play with you. So thank you for being so patient while dad gets stuff done.

It’s not perfect, but I hope one day they might recognize and appreciate what their mom and dad are building.
