Why 34 Feels Like My Prime!
Today at the gym someone asked me how old I was.
When I told them, they responded with
“Man I want to be like you when I grow up. You have so much energy.”
I’m going to take this as a compliment. But apparently I’m at an age that it’s surprising how much energy I have…
I'm only 34. I don’t feel old and I hope I never do, BUT time does sneak up on us.
Because this is the time that everyone is rethinking their fitness and diet routines, I wanted to share mine.
NOTE: This is what I do. This is not what you have to do. Often times what works is what you stick with. Pick something and stay consistent with it.
Fitness routine:
Monday - strength and conditioning work, metabolic conditioning, Jiu Jitsu
Tuesday - Run, body weight calisthenics , Jiu Jitsu
Wednesday - body building, longer conditioning work.
Thursday - Strength and conditioning work, jiu jitsu
Friday - run, body building
Saturday - run, conditioning, lighter pump sesh
Sunday - long cardio
Accessory work every single day without fail of
100 push ups
40 strict pull ups
20 handstand push ups
handstand walk
50 air squats.
Strength and conditioning is more “functional training” or CrossFit.
I’ve been Crossfitting before it was cool (circa 2009) and I swear by it.
Runs on short days are 1.5 miles. Runs on long days are upwards to 13.1
Body building covers the full body during that entire sesh
NUTRITION:
People don’t like hearing this but abs are made in the kitchen.
Again it’s different for everyone, but the rule of thumb is calories in vs calories out.
If you consume less than your burning, you’ll lose weight, more and you’ll gain weight. It’s that simple.
Ok then so what do you eat??
If I tell you what I eat, you’ll try and do the same thing.
Instead I’ll tell you what I DONT eat.
alcohol (none, seriously)
desserts.
soda
fast food
candy
deep fried food
Ok that probably sounds like I don’t ever enjoy myself.
And that definitely doesn’t sound like anything sustainable… but here’s the trick:
I know what’s important to me and what I really want to have and I make room for it.
Every Sunday I have a couple donuts.
Once a month I have pizza and eat the WHOLE thing
In n out is every other month
on vacation I eat whatever I want because I keep it lean the week or two before
Maybe this is psychotic, but it also works (for me). There’s a system that will work for you as well. Maybe this one, maybe not.
To summarize:
just get out and start moving. Do something, anything. Run, walk, lift, bike, Pilates, yoga, swim, WHATEVER
cut out the junk from your diet. You know what it is.
I have nothing to sell you, I don’t coach this stuff anymore, but I’ve been living it for most of my life and it’s worth sharing.
If you want to jam about any of this, at any time, I’m happy to chat!
