“The Family Board Meeting; You Have 18 Summers To Create Lasting Connection With Your Children”

One of my all time favorite parent reads.

I’ve read this a few times now and highly recommend it for any ambitious/ entrepreneur parent.

Here’s how I’ve implemented what Jim Sheils writes about

🧵

First, the basic premise:

  1. Every 90 days you schedule out and put aside an uninterrupted one on one activity with them, that is a minimum of 4 hours long.

  2. You totally unplug and put the phones down

  3. You let them choose the activity

  4. Finish it up with meaningful conversation and talking about all the fun you had

  5. Make it a tradition

SO cool, and SUCH a good read, but the point of this is to truly make regular QUALITY time with your kids and build that into the year without fail.

Here’s what we do👇

Every year I have a minimum of 2 weekend or overnight getaways with each of my kiddos.

The travel and overnight in a hotel is almost as much fun as whatever else we’re doing

I haven’t totally gone unplugged (yet), but I majorly minimize the phone usage. It’s a work in progress 🤦🏻‍♂️

My oldest is 6, middle is almost 4 and youngest is 3 months. My 6 year old definitely has options on where she wants to go, but my middle just goes with the flow right now.

As they get older, I’m sure they’ll have more to say on this.

On the drive or flight home, I like to recap the adventure and go through all the pics and videos I took with them to really log in the memory and talk about the favorite things we did.

I’ll even make a video after the fact covering the specific time

While we only started this 2 years ago, it’s an annual thing now that we make sure to hit. Both my wife and I will take each kid away solo (at separate times) for an adventure.

We just got back from the mountains. It was a blast! Even though the trip was to go tubing, the fun in the hotel was probably just as exciting for her. It’s the little things!

If you haven’t read this book, you should.

Actually I’d say go with the audiobook. It has a great add on bonus with @jonvroman from Front Row Dads. 👌🏻
